Are you over 21 years of age and hold a full drivers licence?

Are you confident in your driving ability and would like to support young people to reach their full potential?

Then jump on board this opportunity and become a volunteer with the headspace Knox and EACH L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program.

How does the program work?

The Victorian Graduated Licensing System makes it compulsory for learner drivers under 21 years of age to obtain at least 120 hours of supervised driving experience prior to taking the probationary licence test. The L2P program helps young people who have significant barriers to learning to drive to gain their required hours of driving experience.

Young people are matched with fully licensed volunteer mentors and use a fully maintained and serviced vehicle to gain their 120 hours of driving experience required to obtain a probationary driver’s licence. Learner drivers also receive professional lessons throughout the program to evaluate their progress at the different stages of learning to drive. Access to the sponsored vehicle is available 7 days a week and sessions are negotiated between the learner driver and mentor.

Mentors develop a trusting and supportive relationship with young people by providing them with the tools they need to be safe and confident drivers. By helping young people get their licence, mentors empower young people with a greater sense of independence while increasing opportunities to access education and employment. Mentors benefit from giving back to the community and gain a sense of satisfaction in making a positive impact in the lives of young people.

I would like to volunteer as a Mentor, how can I get involved?

Are you over 21 years of age, can make a commitment of at least one hour a week, hold a full drivers licence and want to help young people?

Volunteer Mentors need to register their interest in the program, attend an interview, and complete the mandatory background checks. Mentors will be provided with comprehensive training from VicRoads that will prepare them for their role as a supervising driver. To register your interest in becoming a Volunteer Mentor in the Knox L2P program, click here to complete the application form.

Completed application form to be emailed to L2P@each.com.au

TAC L2P Program

**Applications for the L2P program are currently open!**

The TAC L2P Program assists disadvantaged Victorian learner drivers aged 16 to 21 with no access to a supervising driver or vehicle to gain the 120 hours driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

The TAC L2P Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), managed by the Department of Transport (DoT), supported by the Victorian Government and coordinated by headspace Knox.

How does it work?

The TAC L2P Program matches learners from 16 to 21 years old with a fully-licensed volunteer driver and practice vehicle to help them gain driving experience.

Before being matched with a volunteer mentor, learners participating in the program have access to up to seven free driving lessons throughout the program with a professional instructor. This helps learners build their skills before getting on the road with a volunteer mentor and continue progressing through the four stages of the Graduated Licensing System.

The program focuses on helping young people become safe, confident drivers in an effort to reduce Victoria’s road toll. It also provides an opportunity for young people to interact with positive adult role models, gain confidence and move towards social independence.

Who is eligible for the TAC L2P program?

Learners need to meet the following criteria to join the TAC L2P program:

· be between 16 and 21 years old

· hold a current learner permit

· have no access to a vehicle or a supervising driver*

· live in the City of Knox

* Applications outside of the standard criteria will also be considered, please contact your L2P Coordinator for further information.

Application process for Learners

To be eligible for the TAC L2P program, learners (or their parent or guardian) need to complete a learner driver application form, click here to access.

Send your completed form to L2P@each.com.au. Once received, an L2P program coordinator will contact you to schedule an interview time.

Becoming a L2P Mentor

The TAC L2P program doesn’t just benefit learner drivers. The program gives our volunteer mentors an opportunity to connect with their community, and directly help a young person.

We have a full training program for mentors to ensure you’re well prepared to mentor a learner driver and understand your role as a supervising driver. Learners participating in the program also have access to free driving lessons with a professional instructor to build their skills before getting on the road with a volunteer mentor.

Mentors need to meet the following criteria to join the TAC L2P program:

  • be over 21 years old
  • hold a current full Victorian driver licence
  • Hold current Working with Children Check (volunteer) and Police Check
  • Undertake recruitment and induction processes, including L2P Mentor 1 day training.
