headspace Day 2020 recap

headspace Day is our national day of support for the mental health and wellbeing of all young Australians. In 2020, this day was celebrated on Wednesday 14th October in Qld and Wednesday 21st October in NSW.

To celebrate this day, headspace Miranda held a pop up at a local shopping centre inviting members of the public to ‘Chalk about Mental Health’. The community was asked how they look after their mental health and were invited to provide a sentence, word or phrase to leave a positive message for others to see.

  

 

headspace Hurstville encouraged everyone to use their creative side by running a free art class in partnership with a local art studio. The event was accessible to the entire community to participate either online or in person.

  

On Wednesday 14th October, during Queensland Mental Health Week, our four Queensland headspace by Stride centres celebrated headspace Day! 

We knew that headspace Day would look a bit different this year, so we decided to provide a range of activities based on our 7 tips for a healthy headspace via Zoom. These included:

  • Getting creative with an art class
  • Staying active with some Zumba
  • Cooking up some delicious and healthy meals and;
  • Stretching it out with some relaxation yoga

It was amazing to see all of the people who attended the event via Zoom and they loved seeing our staff and Youth Reference Group Members participating in the centres.

  

Additionally, we had a number of self-care packs that were given away to young people and family and friends of young people, who wrote in to tell us how they bring one of the healthy headspace tips to life. These packs included our newly developed Help a Mate card game! This card game was created by young people and is based on the 7 healthy headspace tips, asking you to choose the best tip for different scenarios that a mate might be experiencing.

2020 has been a challenging year, so we were excited to encourage our communities in Qld and NSW to pause and take a moment to think about the small steps that you can take to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people in Australia.
